The NCP431 integrated circuit is a three-terminal programmable split regulator diode. These ICs are a direct upgrade to the industry standard TL431A. The monolithic IC voltage reference operates as a low temperature coefficient Zener and is programmable from Vref to 36 V with two external resistors. The characteristics of this reference make it an excellent replacement for Zener diodes in many applications such as digital voltmeters, power supplies, and operational amplifier circuits. 2.5 V reference makes it easy to obtain a stable reference from a 5.0 V logic supply because the NCP431 operates as a shunt regulator. Because the NCP431 operates as a shunt regulator, it can be used as either a positive or negative voltage reference. The low minimum operating current makes this device an excellent choice for an auxiliary regulator in SMPS adapters with very low unloaded power consumption.
